6 Foods for Optimal Respiratory Health

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

Covid-19 highlighted the TLC we perhaps lack when it comes to our lungs, one of the body’s most essential organs. Below are some foods you should always strive to have in the kitchen to keep this breathing apparatus tip top.

Carrots

Carrots are one of the greatest food sources of Vitamin A. Vitamin A plays an essential role in cell growth and repair, especially in the lungs. Infants with low vitamin A are more likely to suffer from respiratory disease and premature babies, hospitalised for respiratory issues, usually have low blood levels of Vitamin A.

Berries

Blueberries, raspberries and cranberries are among the richest sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants help mop up free radicals found in polluted air and cigarettes which damage the lung lining. Alpha 1 antitrypsin (AT) is essential in maintaining lung elasticity to ensure maximum breathing capacity is reached. Antioxidants help AT achieve this function.

Tumeric

Curcumin found in turmeric is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. It helps keep the airways clear by reducing swelling caused by potential infections or irritants. It also helps break down and eliminate mucus which further clears the airways, thus helping to prevent coughing and sore throats.

Garlic

Garlic is a rich source of quercetin which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory modulator, particularly in lung tissue. Garlic also has strong antibacterial properties and has been found to reduce the duration of upper respiratory tract infections.

Watercress

It often benefits individuals with respiratory disease to reduce or eliminate their dairy consumption. Dairy can be pro-inflammatory of certain tissues, such as theparietal pleural membrane surrounding the lungs, and can increase mucus production and thickness in the airways. On top of this, medications treating lung disease can often restrict calcium absorption. It is essential, therefore, to ensure that abundant alternative sources of calcium are included in the diet. Green, leafy vegetables such as watercress are excellent candidates for the role as they are packed full of highly absorbable calcium to help maintain functioning muscles, healthy bones and a strong nervous system, all integral for robust respiratory health.

Manuka honey

Native to New Zealand, Manuka honey is farmed from a specific plant called Leptospermum scoparium. It contains high amounts of Methylglyoxal (MGO) which make its antibacterial effects distinguishably stronger than other honeys. It also contains powerful antioxidant, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory traits. Combined, these help to kill harmful bacteria and alleviate throat pain and swelling, particularly in those undergoing or having undergone radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Look for brands with a UMF of 10+, that way it’s guaranteed to contain DHA and Leptosperin as well as MGO which work in synergy to promote its therapeutic health benefits.
